About A-DOTS Scale model contest

A-DOTS Student Model Making Competition is the only competition of its kind that provides students in model making, industrial design technology or a related field, the opportunity to enter a model for review by a panel of experienced professionals. The student model makers who are selected as winners in the various categories are eligible for recognition, professional-level conference registration at the next A-DOTS gathering and cash prizes!

Our competition for students to submit their best work began at the very first Conference, highlighting A-DOTS support and encouragement of students. The idea was that students who produce work for their courses are often exhibiting talents and abilities that prepare them to be excellent model makers, and the Conferences are the best place to meet and identify these emerging model makers.

We’ve watched many of our A-DOTS alumni become talented professional members of the A-DOTS – with some receiving internship and employment offers right at the Conference. Many return for Conferences as professional attendees, and even take on leadership roles in the A-DOTS.

What Can I Gain by Entering the Competition?

Your entry will be viewed by 150+ professionals who will attend the biennial A-DOTS Conferences. Many hiring managers and company directors will be at the conference to assess the ability and talent among soon-to-graduate students.

Prizes

A-DOTS awards prizes of one lakh for 1st place, fifty thousand for 2nd place and twenty five thousand for 3rd place.

Each winner will also receive a set of digital calipers, free registration to the next A-DOTS conference and a certificate of merit. As a competition winner, photos of your model and information about you will be featured on the A-DOTS website following the competition. What Does It Cost to Enter the Competition?

If you are a student member of the A-DOTS (either on your own or through your school), you are eligible to enter at no additional cost. If you are not currently a member, you must become a member of the A-DOTS. Student membership is Rs:3000/year.

What are the Official Rules and Guidelines?

Student(s) enrolled in college-level curriculum at an accredited university or college must have completed the model during their course of study within the past 18 months. Student(s) must be a current A-DOTS Student member (Education Memberships included) or become a member to enter the competition.

Student(s) must e-mail the Online Competition Registration Form (pdf) to adotsscalemodelcontest@gmail.com not later than August 26, of the conference year. Group projects will be accepted in all categories. Cash prize will be divided equally among all members of the group.

All registered entrants must send two high-resolution (300 dpi) images of their model to Samanthi Martinez at adotsscalemodelcontest@gmail.com by September 1 of the conference year. These images will become part of A-DOTS archives, and may be used for future publications

Registrant is responsible for packing, insuring and shipping entry to and from conference venue. If you will not be present to unpack and prepare your model for presentation, you will need to make arrangements with someone coming to the conference to do so on your behalf. A-DOTS staff or officers will not be responsible for preparing your entry for the competition.

The model must be strong enough to be handled, for assessment and judging. It should be durable enough to be packed, shipped and displayed. Finishes should be considered carefully to ensure that they will not be damaged in transit, and wherever possible, ‘mechanical’ fixings should be used. Where appropriate, models should be made up of sub-assemblies (avoiding the use of glue) to enable safer shipping and ease of making.

It is important to represent the materials of the original design convincingly. Sometimes it may be suitable to use the same materials (timber, aluminum etc), but mostly, you will need to develop ways to mimic finishes at scale.
